Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a potential outcome of tuberculosis (TB), but tuberculosis (TB) also predicts a likelihood of COPD. Treating and screening for TB infection can potentially offset the loss of life-years that result from COPD caused by TB. A core objective of this research was to assess the potential life-years gained from averting tuberculosis and its contribution to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Comparing observed (no intervention) and counterfactual microsimulation models built upon rates from the Danish National Patient Registry, which covered all Danish hospitals between 1995 and 2014, was undertaken. Within the Danish population of 5,206,922 individuals who did not have tuberculosis (TB) or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), 27,783 individuals developed TB. Of the tuberculosis cases, 14,438 (520% of the overall count) were also found to have co-occurring chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Preventing tuberculosis resulted in the preservation of 186,469 life-years. The life-years lost to tuberculosis alone amounted to 707 per individual, and those who developed COPD after tuberculosis incurred an additional 486 years lost.
